To create order out of chaos is a fabulous thing. Drawing was as a child, a way of controlling my world. Magic. Paper and pencil was my way of making things work. I still after 30 years get a kick out of seeing images appear on my desk. From my minds eye to the screen.

There is a lot of work involved. At that moment when you first visualize a story or a clients requirements, there is still magic for me. Solving problems with mind and body is truly fulfilling and I have always tried to... I hope.. carry that out in an original way.

Here are a few recent illustration commissions of mine for New Zealand National Geographic.Our friend Moko." To the dolphin alone beyond all other, nature has granted what the best philosophers seek : friendship for no advantage".- Plutarch .

Apparently our upright hairy friends didn't progress in an evolutionary manner from being knuckle - walkers to the standing position. There was some bright spark... Ardipithecus ramidus, that use to climb out of the trees on occasions and just walked upright for the hell of it. Some people are just natural born innovators. Monkey see, monkey do could be more of the real story. I went off those cute little chimps after Sir Richard presented a documentary where a gang of the little shits rounded up a few Lemurs, murdered them and ate them. It's a jungle out there. Certainly no tea party.

People love birds. They are our alter egos. Free spirits flying around. They have to work hard though. They sing. Anything with a bird image on it is well received. Different types of birds can symbolise different things. Very fragile. Colourful. A joy to look at.
My favorites would have to be the King Fisher and The Oyster Catcher.

When I was a kid, some relatives came to live with us from America. They brought some LP records with them.It was a big deal because up until then we didn't have a record player or records.I particularly remember the West Side Story cover art.It puzzled me how it could be so simple but powerful. The music was good too.I just got a dog as well and we decided to name him after one of the characters in the musical.Riff. Unfortunately Riff was a bit mad and had to be relocated to a farm. Well that's what they told me at the time.I only found out recently that the cover art was created by Soul Bass. One of the greatest illustrators / designers around.

We have had a few foggy days here in Wellington.I like fog.Creates a calm feeling.It means there is no wind.A bit of cool and warm air at the same time.When I took this photo I was looking at this big spot on the image.I thought it was something on the lens.Then realalized it was the ghostly image of the Sun through the fog.

At some stage people will always try and dress up their pets like this. Why do people do this? Pets are an extension of the owners often. Who owns who in this relationship ? Pet owners have to buy the food , give shelter and look after the animal. It's a pretty easy life generally for the cat or dog. Catch the odd mouse. Bark at burglars, then it's lunch time and a nap. Having a animal around the house is a way of keeping in touch with the real world. They are a variation of ourselves. Wildlife is really under threat at the moment. Not the domesticated kind. We are really pushing our luck with the planet. It is going to turn around and bite us in the ass if we aren't careful.

A friend just sent this little animation.When I was a kid my Dad use to plonked me in front of the cartoons on the TV at the Walnut Creek Fire Station in Lafayette, California.I can still watch the Bugs Bunny Show and the Road Runner.Has to be directed by Chuck Jones though.He gave a talk in Sydney once. Should have gone to that.A big influence on my work.Beep beep.

Here is my first attempt at illustrating this story.The opening line was about how it feels to be a cyclist. Cars like planes on a runway. Very vulnerable.This image was rejected for this other illustration. I always expect my viewers to work when looking at my illustrations. It seems in these times you have to spell everything out. I really do think people are losing the ability to look at things. We are feed so many images now days we have become lazy in interpreting images or thinking about what we are looking at. Everything has become just eye candy.

Well as it happens,the client didn't like my Pagliacci illustration.Never mind here's where we ended up going.You really need to read the script on this. If you listen to the last bit of act one there is a few bars from the song " Send In The Clowns " they borrowed.Actually this illustration is a work in progress,so who knows where this could go.

Pagliacci is a great opera.I downloaded an early version on itunes for only seven dollars.
End of act one is fantastic. Google all the guff on this. Too much to list here.
Seemed right for my illustration for this months Mind page in Geographic. I was thinking about the Seinfeld take on this very graphic clown. The story is about the association between language and music.
Conveying emotion. You don't get much more emotional than Pagliacci.
You don't need to know Italian to follow this Opera.

Radio New Zealand has an afternoon programme called Matinee Idle. Week days from 12:30 to 5 p.m .It is about to run for it's last week. I have been slightly obsessed by it's old world comedy and music. It's like talk back but doesn't take itself too seriously. Mostly 60's and 70'S pop music. Odd covers that really are like out takes from the vast music memory banks of the two hosts, Phil O'Brien and Simon Morris. Their depth of knowledge of music and more importantly, recall , has to be heard to believed. It's hard to define. Like two party goers who have control of the record player. The noisy showoff. Very intelligent. Like a neat pair of pants that don't fit. It helps define our history over the last 50 years through it's playfulness with music. You are reminded what has been lost through marketing and commerciallisation since our youth. It is live and unrehearsed . People are encouraged to participate though emails and text. They play hard to get with their listeners as all good performers have to do. Like doctors and consultants they maintain a certain coolness to hold their station. But they relay on their listeners for most of the show.Truly interactive, it sizzles. Sometimes to the point it starts to smoke and burn. But that's their job.To push the boundaries. They now have a Facebook page. Part Prairie Home Companion, part Saturday Night Request Session. Mostly Goon Show, it has been described as student radio for old farts. It's more than that. I can't find a name for it. It has a lot of soul and reminds me of days in Nelson listening to the old valve radio. Late nights in the bedroom glowing away like a little fire or beacon. A rescue beacon. It is hard to sustain this sort of comedy and relies on fresh contributions. We New Zealanders are really good at ignoring and undervaluing what we have right in front of us. Sadly it will soon disappear. It only airs on public holidays. Just like playtime, the bell will soon ring and we will all have to return to our stuffy classrooms and desks. There will always be a class clown to break the monotony. However I would advise listeners to look after Matinee Idle. The Headmaster and School Board could easily have these lovable scamps expelled.

Bored out of my skull as a teenager in what I saw as an artistic desert, sunny Nelson was a poor place for a budding illustrator. The hallways at Nelson collage were lined with original Woollastons . " Tossers" as we called them. They were probably gifted to the school back then as no one thought that much of them. Nelson was over- run with landscapes. Not good for someone who craved modern art or "Pop Art" as it was called, seen in the arts reviews in air mailed issuses of Time magazine. However as I roamed those well waxed squeaky linoleum hall floors, I couldn't but help think, "those will be worth something one day" I often thought of lifting one of the walls, they seemed to be everywhere, (no one will miss that) and take one home with me on my bicycle. I wish I had.They seem so modern now. What is old , is new again. It is significant too that today, my partner is at a funeral for a person who was pivotal to her development as an illustrator and artist. Donna spent many a school holiday in Mapua with the Philpott family at their bach .Margaret was very encouraging. There is always someone who stands out as a guiding hand.You only need one or two people to help you out. But they are very important .

I just spent a few days at my old homestead in Nelson. It has one of the best views of the harbor and hills. We moved to Nelson from San Francisco. It was my fathers idea. He hated the politics at the time and there was a threat of Nuclear war. It was the height of the Cold War. He had been based in Wellington as a US Marine during the Second World War and later survived battles at Guadacanal,Tarawa ,Saipan and Tinian. Shell shocked, with a few scars he was keeping his family from harms way moving to New Zealand. This flag here would get itself in terrible tangles and then unfurl itself to fly gracefully. Not unlike America or my father for that matter. It was quite mesmerising . More interesting due to the very unusual gales . Winds of change ? I like to think so. I still have a soft spot for the stars and stripes.Very graphic. Dear RL would have been 84 this October. Our Captain Haddock. He died aged 54. A chain smoker, unfiltered. 40 a day, I miss him. I would have liked to know what he would have thought about this flag flapping away right in front of our house ?

Someone asked what's with the Moggy Man name. There used to be a ice block when I was a teenager called Moggy Man. I saw a
free give away for a Moggy Man T-Shirt.They were meant for real little kids. I wrote to Tip Top and said I was rather large for my age and could they send me a large T-Shirt. I got one in the mail. They must have felt sorry for me, probably thought I was a special needs person because they printed the character on a large T-Shirt.The character was a complete rip off of Roger Ramjet, a very cleverly animated TV cartoon during the same period. Minimal artwork and very simple animation. But Moggy Man was ours. Odd though because "Moggy" is a British term for cat ???? Derivation of mongrel. Pussy Man ??? I actually did a painting of
Moggy Man a few years back.Must get a photo of that. A friend down the road has it.

The Wellington concert was an eye opener. We listen to our ipods. Our CD's. We watch our HD tv's but there an't nothing like the real thing. Like a true musician, you can't really fully capture what he has with technology. Don't get me wrong. I love technology. Funny though because Ry Cooder was the first to record digitally."Bop Till You Drop".You couldn't help feeling you were watching over a 100 years of American music on stage, but he made it his own. A bright shiny piece of Americana sparkled in Wellington on Tues night.

Mad Men is hotting up.Where's it going to go with Betty's dad and the little daughter ? Loved this weeks trailer with the shot of the granddad sitting next to the little girl driving the car. Hmmmm.... Oh dear,this can't be good. Peggy suits being a little stoned. And the Al Jolson scene was excruciating. Kim Hill on Saturday's radio interview with the creator/writer of Mad Men failed to mention most of the writers on the show are women. Odd considering some of the themes.

After watching the Luit Beiringa film about Peter McLeavey: “The Man In The Hat” I was inspired to present the owner of Wellington's premier dealer gallery with a few of my own photographs. An avid gatherer of photography, he mentioned in the film that there was one more image out there somewhere, ready to present itself and complete his collection. I chose a few of my favourite photos I shot over the last few years and the local chemist printed some excellent 5x4s for me. Feeling very excited, I drove off to Peter’s gallery. After a little chat with Sir Peter (has he been Knighted yet? He should be. Services to the Arts.) I presented him with my photographs. Always considerate, although a little confused by my many visits over the years, he paused at this photograph. "The Stairs To Nowhere" "I like this" he said.I do too, but...is it the one ??

Wanganui's Mayor, Michael Laws reminds me of the tired old movie star played by Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulavard. Long after the media and the public has got sick of his controversial rantings he will be left mumbling to some none exsistent radio microphone or newspaper photographer.
His eye mascara running down his face reveiling his beadly little eyes, scary, clown like, wonder where everyone went. Desparate for attention and senile , he'll have to fuel his egomania with crumpled old newspaper clippings featuring his worst blitherings.
Eventualy, like William Holden in the opening shot in Sunset Bolavard, Michael will be soon found drowned, floating face down in his own pool of self-deceit, spiritual emptiness and narcissism. Sunset Bolavard is a great classic movie.
Unlike Laws worthless B rated tacky little show that will soon go straight to DVD, where it will gather dust in smelly, grimy, video stores.

Popcorn film man replaced the flying kiwi for the NZ Film Commission.

He visited Berlin, Cannes and Toronto and is about to go off to the USA. He has appeared on booklets, invitations and signage promoting NZ film. He has

travelled more than me lately. Must renew my passport. While creating this image we ate quite a bit of popcorn. Not a bad snack really.

Here is a character I designed a few years ago
for the New Zealand Film Commission.
Used originally as a device to promote short films he hit the spot and had quite a long life.
Quirky, kiwi's can fly. Clever little fellow made some wings out of film. He traveled to Cannes and Toronto. Now retired and resting in Breaker Bay. Replaced by Pop Corn Man...

A while ago a friend wanted me to design a mouse character for a pet food company.
Mouse and guinea pig food. There is quite a history of mouse images. The Swedes dug up a bronze mouse head, actually it was supposed to be a lions head but it looks a lot like Mickey, dated 900 AD. One of the
best characters comes from George Herriman 1921 cartoon Krazy Kat. Beautiful pen and ink work
and surreal. A big influence on many a cartoonist. Least favourites would be Mickey Mouse 1928,
Mighty Mouse and Danger Mouse. My dad use to call me Speedy after Speedy Gonzales 1953.
You would have to wonder what Speedy was on ?

Not any normal mouse food.
